Spring Cleaning + Cosmic Clean Beauty Challenge

"Is your shampoo making you fat?"

That's the question I read on a website that sparked the curiosity in me to learn more and eventually led to the birth of Cosmic. I’ve shared this story with countless people but I know many of you haven't heard it before and with Cosmic's 6th Anniversary on the horizon (eeek! next month) I've been spending a lot of time reflecting on how this all got started.

You may have read the following from our Story here on the website, but here it goes anyway... "Inspiring me in this walk were 2 moms leading the way for thousands of women from all over with globe with daily bits of wisdom sent conveniently to our email inboxes. Their messages were short and relevant, packed full of good info with plenty of links to back them up and even alternatives they'd tried and loved! One day they proposed a question: ‘Is your shampoo making you fat?’ followed by a list of their top 5 ingredients to avoid and challenged you to see if your daily beauty routine was as clean as marketing implied. Yikes! I was pretty disappointed that my beauty drawer needed some cleaning up."

I'm going to be honest here and share something with you that makes me kind of uncomfortable, but after sitting with this a while I realized that vanity, plain and simple is kinda the reason I'm here. Had that title read anything else, I wonder if I would have clicked through to read more. That email came to me at a time when I was re-evaluating my reality and my relationship with my body and the earth. So here’s the dirty truth to answer the question, "Is your shampoo making you fat?" Harmful chemicals are added to the cosmetics we use everyday for various reasons. Although allowed in small quantities by the FDA, the average woman uses as many as 20 cosmetic products on any given day. Some of those chemicals are known to disrupt the delicate balance of our hormones, mimicking hormones, and blocking or exaggerating our natural hormonal responses, in turn possibly causing weight gain.

Don't think you could possibly be using 20+ products per day? Let's count them together... toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoos, conditioners, soap, body wash, shaving cream, body scrubs, lotions, deodorant, antiperspirant, face wash, toners, face moisturizers, sunscreens, self tanners, primers, foundation, bronzers, blushes, highlighters, eye shadows, eye liners, mascara, setting sprays or powders, lip balms, lip colors, various hair products, nail polishes ... and how many times do you wash your hands a day? How many times do you reapply lotion? Easily 20 product applications per day, I'd say.

I know you’re busy and the task of changing the way we do things is never easy but I'm here to help. I want to make it simple for you. Our family has slowing been upgrading the products we use to more natural alternatives. JASON Sea Fresh toothpaste and Primal Pit Paste natural deodorant are just a couple of my favorites and the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database is a great resource I've used for years.

So here's my Spring Cleaning Challenge for you. Print the card below, walk into your bathroom and take inventory of products you’re using on yourself and your family and share it with me.
